A Guide to Injectables With La Rue Lab Founder Crystal Goode

Cronulla’s Newest Cosmetic Studio

La Rue Lab Cronulla

Opening its doors in early June, La Rue Lab is the newest cosmetic studio gracing Cronulla’s shore. Owner and local mum Crystal has been inundated with clients ever since, only wishing there was just one more day in the week. Crystal, a registered nurse turned cosmetic nurse, provides non-surgical injectables: Anti-wrinkle and Dermal Filler. We recently met Crystal in her luxe studio and her infectious personality instantly made us feel welcome. Not wasting any time, we picked the expert’s brain on her experience and all things cosmetics.

Crystal grew up in a medical household with the two most significant women in her life, her mother and grandmother, both nurses, “Anatomy was more common knowledge than my timetables.” Following in their footsteps, Crystal acquired a long list of public and private health experience, whilst always having a special interest in dermatology and mental health. She was first exposed to the industry of cosmetic medicine when she fell pregnant with her daughter 14 years ago, “Growing up I had amazing skin, but when I fell pregnant my hormones were significantly affected, causing sebaceous cyst pimples. This is where my interest in medical and dermatology first coincided.” Crystal was quick to become a sought-after cosmetic nurse frequently travelling interstate to see clients.

As Crystal continued to share her knowledge, her love and passion for her work shone through. Crystal is a big believer in educating her clients, sharing that many are often uneducated or misinformed about injectables.

What is something people usually don't know about injectables and your services?

“Most people don’t know that injectables are classified as a medical procedure. They require a script to be issued prior to treatment commencing just like any other drug not available over the counter. Like all medical procedures, this too comes with medical risks. It makes me anxious knowing not all clients know the risks associated, even despite having previous treatment elsewhere. I ensure my service includes a meticulous education session.”

What is the biggest misconception when it comes to injectables?

“Lip filler will give you duck lips - this is not the case at all! Lip augmentation done right can enhance, volumise and even correct natural lip shape. It's easily the most popular treatment performed in the Lab and we practise on the side of enhancing natural beauty not creating cardboard cutouts.

Another misconception would be that Botox is a brand, not a treatment. The treatment name is actually Anti-wrinkle.”

Not only does Crystal work on educating her clients, but preventative measures are at the forefront of her consultations. As a result, Crystal is introducing her own skin care range to support what she does in clinic and aid in longevity of good skin health. The skincare range focuses on prevention, so people can put off this work until it is necessary.

Crystal says the biggest difference between her clinic and others in the industry is the products she stocks and her ethical and honest approach. Crystal always looks into people’s drive behind getting work done. She explains there is a big difference between people who have been considering a treatment for a long time, compared to a spur of the moment decision. She is not afraid to say no to her clients requests.

Crystal is proud to be a real, honest and young mum which has instilled confidence to give direct and reliable advice. Each service is completely tailored, taking into account everything from a client’s family medical history to their lifestyle and current skincare regime. She says, unlike the cosmetic franchises who often stock one brand, that she stocks all different products, as one single product won’t suit everyone.

Why do you stock a large range of different products, rather than just one?

“I believe that not one size fits all. Rheology is the least taught information of cosmetic nursing but to me is the most important. This is the study of how matters (dermal filler gels) can interact and break down in different planes and mobile areas of the face.

In short, no two faces are the same, and what works for one won't always work for the other. So I stock a variety because I think it's important to take into consideration the facial structure, the skin integrity and the desired outcomes. To determine the best product for a patient, I must assess them in person. Plus when one option doesn't last as long as we hope, then we try a different one until we find one compatible for the individual.”

What will it set us back?

“Anti-wrinkle treatment is generally between $320 to $550. Dermal Filler varies based on the area and amount but generally starts at $395 and can reach $1300.”

How long do injectables last?

Product longevity is always dependent on personal metabolic rate, however, generally speaking, Anti-wrinkle is anywhere between 2 to 4 months and Dermal Fillers, dependent on the treatment area, is 6 to 18 months.”

Are there any side effects?

“Anti-wrinkle side effects can include a dull like headache for a few days following the treatment. This occurs as the muscles are ‘put to sleep’ and your body is trying to alert you of this problem. Other side effects can include bumps, bruises, redness and sometimes irritation.

Dermal Filler side effects may include some pain or discomfort for a few days post treatment. In rare cases you can have allergic reactions to both dermal filler and anti wrinkle which is why this is considered a medical procedure and should only be performed by a health practitioner.”

What more can we expect from La Rue Lab in the future?

“Along with our Skincare range, which is almost here, we will also be offering IV vitamin infusions once COVID restrictions ease. We do have more things planned for early next year but you'll have to stay tuned for that!”
