I scream, you scream

Anita Gelato, Cronulla

Anita Gelato, Cronulla

With warm months ahead, one of the best Aussie tropes comes to the surface: our love of gelato and ice cream. Truly - is there anything better? It’s an adoration strong enough to forgive the queues and even those sticky drips and drops.

Being by the coast, we are blessed with an abundance of gelato spots and ice creameries that satisfy die-hard sweet tooths not only as the weather gets hot, but through the cooler months too. We’ve done you the ultimate favour and worked hard to taste our way through the lot - so without further ado, we present you with Scout’s guide to gelato and ice cream in the Sutherland Shire.

Where To Find Gelato And Ice Cream In The Sutherland Shire

Anita Gelato, Cronulla

Anita

Anita may be a newcomer to the Shire, but La Mamma del Gelato has been a longstanding favourite for a worldwide audience. Serving boutique, 100% handmade ice cream, frozen yoghurt and sorbet (over 150 different kinds, to be exact), Anita has attracted customers - and long lines - for many summers, though it only hit our shores 10 years ago. Of the six Australian-based locations, we've been blessed with one in our very own Cronulla.

Scout Picks: The 'Pistachio Bronte' is hard to beat. If you're a froyo fanatic, opt for one of their frozen yoghurts topped with fresh fruit, sweet syrup, their renowned chocolate sauces, or unique homemade jams.

Messina Miranda

Messina

Known for their decadent, original creations, Messina have been hailed far-and-wide as one of the most popular gelato destinations. Although the brand has amassed a cult-like following, Messina’s story began back in 2002 with a single Sydney-based location. Now, each store is decked out with a 40-flavour cabinet comprising 35 classics and 5 rotating weekly specials, all of which are made in-house (including any fillings, toppings and additions).

Scout Picks: Messina’s ‘Salted Caramel and White Chocolate’ flavour has a cult-like following and for good reason!

Gelatissimo

The team behind Gelatissimo have been using traditional techniques to make great tasting gelato since the first store opened in 2002 on Newtown’s King Street. Since, they have expanded not just nation-wide but internationally - as far as China, India and the United States, in fact. From fruity to experimental, there are over 50 flavours in Gelatissimo’s core range, so there’s sure to be one to suit every possible taste and dietary persuasion.

Scout Picks: Nothing hits harder than Gelatissimo’s ‘Decadent Cookie Dough’. Think cookie flavoured gelato with chunks of choc chip cookie dough and caramel fudge swirls.

South Cronulla Ice Creamery and Espresso Bar

South Cronulla Ice Creamery and Espresso Bar

This poppy and fun ice creamery perfectly captures that “humble beachside treat store” essence: a gumball machine at the door, a cabinet of baked goods and, of course, a chock-full cabinet of colourful ice cream flavours. You can, of course, grab a cone to go, or you could take a seat and tuck into their popular waffles and ice cream combo and pair it with a milkshake.

The Gelato Factory By Charlie

The Gelato Factory By Charlie

Foodie Charlie’s love affair with gelato is a long-standing one. In testament to his Italian roots, his first-ever store was situated in Sydney’s Italian heart of Leichhardt, and he’s been manufacturing some of the best scoops around since. So good, in fact, that he supplies to restaurants and has won many awards. Charlie’s point of difference lies in his imagination; when he’s not serving customers, you’ll find him dreaming up a wacky and wonderful new flavour or way of eating this Italian delicacy.
