Kate, one of the many brains behind Surround, was inspired by the spaces she grew up in and her vivid memory of every backyard from her childhood. And that is exactly what she seeks for her clients - evocative moments that remain front and centre.

“A stunning garden to look at as you brew your morning coffee. A crystal clear pool for the kids to jump in after a long day at school. A crackling fire pit to get cosy around with a big glass of full-bodied red. These aspects of home life are our idea of heaven, and we want them for you, too.”

“The opportunities are endless depending on what you’re after. Popular elements include a swimming pool and spa, built-in fire pits and outdoor gas fireplaces, entertaining areas with pergolas, outdoor kitchen and cabanas and built-in daybeds to perch in the summer sun. Designer concrete stairs are a beautiful feature to transition between spaces.”

So where to start when it comes to inspo? Kate has a few wise words of advice.

“We have a whole world of inspiration right in the palm of our hands these days. And social media continues to be the go-to for getting inspired. It’s easy to get deep in an Instagram creep when you get onto something you love. But on top of that, be inspired by elements of your own space that can be utilised and maximised like old trees that provide shade, the way your kitchen opens up onto your outdoor area, where the sun and breeze are. All of those elements, coupled with a great idea of your style will lend itself to a beautiful and functional design.”
