Part Time Ceramics: The Shire’s Own Ceramic Studio

Gather your crafty buds and get your hands dirty with a workshop, class or studio time

PART-TIME CERAMICS TAREN POINT

Part Time Ceramics, Taren Point

Anyone who has experienced the joy of working with clay will be thrilled to learn about the Shire’s very own Part-Time Ceramics. With chic studios located in both Taren Point and Engadine and a range of classes, workshops and open studio slots available, there’s a little something to suit everyone.

Owned and operated by local creative Siobhan and her sidekick doggy pal Moby, Part-Time Ceramics was born out of lockdown. Always a hobby, Siobhan could never find a studio in Sydney’s South to fire her work and was on a mission to fill this gap in the market. First opening her Engadine studio in 2020, it wasn’t long before Siobhan continued to sell out of classes. Struggling to keep up with demand, Siobhan opened Taren Point in 2021. “We had our eye on this Taren Point space for a long time. Both studios are light-filled and have a friendly, welcoming charm to them.”

“Running the studios has been one of the greatest and most challenging times. The rewards have always far outweighed the risks and challenges even through the last few lockdowns.”

“I think the shire has an extremely supportive mindset when it comes to rallying behind local businesses. You only need to take a walk through the CBD to see how many businesses have closed to understand how much our community really rallies together and wants to stay local. This mindset transcends generations as we have a wide variety of ages come through the studio on a regular basis.”

For the couples channelling their very own ghost moment, we recommend the date night wheel throw.

No experience is required and you will both be able to pop a finished piece in the kiln to pick up at a later date. The Pottery & Prosseco night is equally fun should you prefer picking up a few hand-building skills. If you’re a wine fanatic (hello), you’ll be pleased to learn both classes are BYO. Snacks are also welcome, so be sure to pack a cheese or two!

Want to get the kids involved?

The Family Wheel Throw workshop is bound to be a riot. You can also opt for a kids-only class if you’ve got a budding artist on your hands. Don’t forget to enquire about their private parties, too, if you’ve got any exciting occasions on the horizon.

If you’re looking to take your clay journey one step further, Part-Time Ceramics have a number of fab four-week courses on offer including Beginners Wheel Throw, Inbetweeners Wheel Throw and Beginners Handbuilding. These classes are a great chance to connect with old mates or make new ones, using your hands to create whilst having a good old chinwag.

“One of the best things about the two studios is how quickly I see bonds develop among the students, especially in our four-week courses. This is a very unique thing about our class environment, everyone gets to know each other and they really do end up being friends with the class becoming a bit of a social event by the end of the four weeks.”

But there’s no need for your clay journey to end here. Keen to provide a welcoming space for clay enthusiasts of all levels, the lovely folk at Part-Time Ceramics also provide Open Studio slots for those who have completed a four-week wheel throwing course. You’ll have equipment, glazes and a shelf to store your creations at your disposal.

Pssst! If you’ve been saving up your Discover vouchers for something fun you can use them here! (workshops only)

If you jump online, you can also shop clay kits.
