Under The Bar, Menai

Not all gyms are created equal, and four-year-old Under The Bar is living proof. Far from the run-of-the-mill, this Menai-based facility is, to be frank, a cut above. And it’s not just their 400 square metre, state-of-the-art studio that gets them there. “Our whole program is based on exercise science,” explains founder, Lys, who is also the fitness guru behind reformer pilates studio, To The Core. “All of our trainers are very highly educated.”

Strength, conditioning and recovery are the bread and butter at Under The Bar. Meticulously planned in 12-week blocks, Lys’ exercise science and pilates background, touts a tried and tested recipe for success.

“The twelve-week blocks are foundational. It’s the best way to ensure we're getting the most out of our clients and are actually helping them reach and exceed their goals, not just get sweaty,” explains Lys of their exercise model. “Every twelve weeks we test everyone's rep maxes and then we adjust their program based on that. It's really in-depth and client-specific; everyone is always improving.”

Their strength-based classes take place over three-quarters of the entire space and are capped at 20-25 members at a time, who are guaranteed the full attention of trainers - and their trained eyes. “There is genuinely so much room. No one is on top of each other, that’s for sure!” says Lys. The other side of this fitness coin is cardio, pilates, sauna, open gym and even remedial massage on Saturdays. The epic sunrise views make those early mornings all worthwhile too.

Let’s face it, the gym can be daunting, especially for those dipping their toes for the first time. But Lys insists that an Under The Bar experience is not just coming in, training and heading out the door. If you’re concerned about your ability to stay accountable and get your money’s worth, you needn’t be. “We know what's going on in our clients’ lives, they know what's going on in ours,” she says.“If we haven’t heard from someone in a few days, we get in touch. We want our clients to feel that they can reach out to us if there's something going on.” In short: no more slacking off, no more sliding under the radar and no more missing your goals.

And the support extends even further, all the way to clients’ external goals and interests. “We launched a run club just over a year ago, but we've really built on it in the last couple of months and it's grown to be quite a big part of our studio,” tells Lys. “We actually host regular events for all of our runners with the intention of building their confidence for larger-scale, high-pressure runs.”

From the client support to the charity fundraisers for causes close to their members’ hearts (three a year, says Lys), the vibe here is undoubtedly one of community.

“It’s hard to put into words. The vibe in here is insane. It is competitive, but not with others. Everyone supports one another. Everyone is screaming and cheering for each other, it’s so epic to see. They're my favourite moments here.”
