What’s On In The Sutherland Shire This January

Let the holidays live on this month with some of the Shire’s best summer tropes

Paul’s Famous Hamburgers, Sylvania

With the Christmas festivities officially behind us, we’ve officially entered a new month - and more importantly, a new year. While many of us are (sadly) gearing up to return to work, January is still the month of long, warm days that stretch into the evening hours, and there are plenty of ways to make the most of them.

From meal deals to afternoons spent soaking up the sun, here’s what’s on in the Sutherland Shire this January.

Get A Deal A Day With Feros Group

The fine people behind Feros Group (The Prince, The Botanical, Highfield, Ugly Pizza, and Huxleys) clearly believe that January still counts as the silly season, and we’re totally on board with anything that prolongs a holiday vibe. For the entire month, they’re slinging daily deals across their venues, such as 2 for 1 main meals, $10 pizzas and burgers, ½ price cocktails and $5 kids meals.

Indulge Your Nostalgia And Grab Some Fish And Chips

If soup is the official meal of winter, fish and chips is the summer equivalent. Truly, is there anything more nostalgic or quintessentially ‘Aussie summer’ than heading down to the beach with a paper-wrapped dose of freshly fried and well-salted fish and chips? We’ve taste tested a fair few cook-ups in our time, so we matched them against yours and created a guide to the Shire’s best fish and chips.

Spend A Day At Boat Harbour

Offering an experience little-found around Sydney, or even Australia, Cronulla’s Boat Harbour is a pristine parcel of coastline where you can drive right along the sand. For $40 per car, you and your favourite people can set up your BBQ conveniently next to your 4WD, fold out your camp chairs and settle in for the day within arm’s reach from the water. Furry friends are welcome, too!

Bite Into One Of Paul’s Famous Hamburgers

Honestly, it’s all in the name. Paul’s set up along the water in Sylvania some 60-odd years ago as a simple “hole in the wall” production, serving fresh burgers with the works and piping hot, salty chips. It’s been a few years since, and while the team’s production - and fame - have grown, their love for a simple, humble hamburger has remained the same. To be frank, we don’t think you can really call yourself a Shire-sider until you’ve tried one, so join the queue and get your fix.

Pack A Picnic

Going out to a fancy restaurant is all well and nice, but there’s also a lot to be said for picking up a selection of your favourite cheese, deli meats and a fresh baguette - and maybe a bottle of wine or two - and heading to one of the Shire’s many beautiful picnic locations. Throw your rug down, spread your goodies on a board, say ‘cheers’ and enjoy the scenery.

Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth

No one likes sticky fingers - unless they’re that way thanks to a freshly-scooped gelato. Being a coastal locale, the Shire is brimming with gelato and ice cream spots ready to satisfy that sweet tooth of yours - from nation-wide establishments to small businesses. You can find our guide to the best ice cream and gelato here.

Take A Hike

Slap on some sunscreen, fill up your water bottle and head out to soak up nature along one of the Shire’s many gorgeous walking tracks. Whether along the coastline, through bushland or maybe even to a natural swimming hole, there’s a walk for every age and ability. We’ve created a definitive guide on the where, what and how of the 12 best walks in the Shire here.
