Like fine wine and cheese, the Shire’s hottest bars and restaurants pair perfectly with impeccable style. Hair and makeup included! While we’d all love to get a voluminous blowout every time we had a social event marked in our calendars, it would be a strain on our schedule - and our wallets, too!
But rest assured, Master Senior Stylist of Cronulla’s Pélo by Lago, Lucy Furniss, is here to save the day with five fabulous and easy-to-achieve hairstyles to suit five iconic Shire venues.
Next Door, Cronulla
1. Heading To Next Door? Try Classic Beachy Waves
À la the beautiful Chrissy Teigen, effortless beachy waves are practically the hallmark of any Shire-local, especially those sipping cocktails at beachside Next Door. “This hairstyle was made for coastal living,” says Lucy.
Lucy’s tips: Always spray with a heat protectant before heat styling. Use the GHD curve tong to create this look, keeping the ends out for a more natural feel. Use a wide tooth comb to separate curls, and spray with a texturising spray. My favourite is O&M!
Cony’s, Cronulla
2. Slick It Back For Cony’s
Fast becoming a Shire icon, Cony’s is fun, feminine and fabulous - just like a slicked back bun, a personal favourite of Lucy’s. “When the weather isn’t looking promising or the humidity is just a little too much (my curly hair girls will understand this), this style is ideal. Plus, you’ll look like you have it all together.”
Lucy’s tips: If you can’t seem to get your hair in that perfect slick look, my first tip is to keep things dirty! Having your hair at least 3 days post-wash will make it easier to smooth and help to gather and control any loose bits. My second is to use the Goldwell Double Boost Root Spray. Then, use a bristle brush to gather all your hair up and secure it in a ponytail. Style the bun as desired, then for the finishing touch use a hairspray and comb to get the last of the fly-aways. My go-to is the Redken Hairspray Fashion Work 12.
C.C. Babcoq, Cronulla
3. Bounce Into C.C. Babcoq With A Fresh Blowout
Flicky ends and body are back, and we’re here for it. “If there’s one look I’m glad to see again, it’s this 90’s do,” says Lucy. “It gives you that beautiful, bouncy curl – volume is key here.” It’s a modern twist on an old favourite, much like bar-meets-rotisserie, C.C. Babcoq.
Lucy’s tips: If you struggle with hold, try a thickening spray like this Oribe Maximising with a good mousse. For all my textured girls, moisture creams will be your best friend. My favourite is the Colour Wow One-Minute Transformation. Blow dry with a large round brush, then set in the Velcro rollers (the bigger, the better). Finish with a texture spray to maximise any movement, or an anti-humidity spray if you know you’ll need to keep that frizz at bay.
The Botanical, Highfields
4. Bring It Up High For Highfields
“If you’re rocking that I-went-out-yesterday-and-went-a-little-too-hard-on-the-dance-floor look, a textured ponytail is for you,” says Lucy. Carefree and vivacious, this ‘do is effortlessly stylish and perfect for a bottomless session at Highfields.
Lucy’s tips: Decide whether you want any pieces out at the front, then follow the slick bun styling tips. For the pony, use a fine tooth comb to tease the very top, closest to where it’s secured. Smooth over the top so you can’t see any teasing and finish with a texture powder to give that pony a bit of extra volume.
Alphabet Street, Cronulla
5. Rock Into Alphabet St Sporting A Not-So-Messy Bun
Chic and fun, there’s no better venue to suit this slightly tousled, ever-so-edgy style, that’s “been everywhere recently”, according to Lucy. “Textured face-framing strands are essential here,” she shares.
Lucy’s tips: Less is more with this look. Try not to pull your hair up too tight, instead, gently pin the bun up and softly pull out some face framing pieces. You may need to play around with the positioning of the bun a couple times - and that’s okay! It’s meant to look like a 5-second do… that in reality took you seven tries, 20 bobby pins and a potential mini break down – we’ve all been there. To finish, use a lightweight hairspray for hold.
